84 new Covid-19 infections and 245 additional recoveries were reported across the Maldives by sundown on Monday.

Latest statistics publicized by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) revealed that 2,216 samples were tested for the virus between 6pm Sunday and 6pm Monday out of which 84 returned positive for Covid-19.

It has been three consecutive days where Covid-19 infections being reported across the nation have been below 100.

Monday’s Covid-19 infections include 32 detected from the Greater Malé Region, 37 from residential islands and 13 from operational resorts. Further two additional infections were also discovered from liveaboard vessels.

With this development, Maldives active Covid-19 tally dropped to 2,829 from 2,990.

A total of 25,701 Covid-19 cases had been confirmed in the Maldives by Monday’s end.

Further, with an additional 245 recoveries observed by Sunday’s end, the country has observed a total of 22,796 recoveries from the infection since it surfaced in the island nation during March 2020.

Over the past 24 hours, public health authorities discharged eight Covid-19 patients from hospitals, meaning that the number of hospital admissions has dropped to 64.

Maldives Covid-19 mortality rate is currently at 0.29 percent, with the pandemic having claimed 67 lives thus far, the latest fatality having been reported on March 31 when a 66-year-old man, who was rushed to the Emergency Room of Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in an unresponsive state, was pronounced dead within minutes.

Authorities reintroduced a curfew in the Greater Malé Region on February 12, in light of the spike in daily infections being reported since January 24. The nearly six-hour curfew was followed by restrictions on vehicle movement from 6pm to 6am for Greater Malé residents. Daily cases being reported began declining recently, leading to the curfew and some restrictions being dissolved.

Despite the eases stemming from a gradual decrease in Covid-19 cases being reported, authorities continue to urge the public to strictly adhere to the precautionary measures and guidelines in place such as maintaining a safe distance, avoiding social gatherings, maintaining hygiene and following the face mask mandate.

Maldives has been in a state of public health emergency for over a year and the last extension is set to expire on May 4.
