A bill has been submitted to parliament to dissolve the Maldives Transport Authority Act (Law No.: 3/2016)

Member of parliament for the Vaikaradhoo constituency Hussain Ziyad has submitted a bill to the People's Majlis, proposing the dissolution of the Maldives Transport Authority Act, as the government has decided to dissolve the authority in order to transfer its operations to the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation Authority. As such, all the employees of the Maldives Transport Authority, their resources and assets will also be transferred to the Transport Ministry

In addition to this, the bill specifies that employees at the Maldives Transport Authority will be considered employees of the Transport Ministry.

In proposing the bill, MP Hussain Ziyad said that one of the main reasons the government had decided to dissolve the Maldives Transport Authority was that there were overlaps between the mandate of that authority, and that of the Transport Ministry. He added that this had caused delays in services being provided to citizens at great losses.

Once the bill is implemented, the resources and assets belonging to the Maldives Transport Authority will be transferred to the Transport Ministry, in addition to the the authority's share of the state budget, its rights and jurisdictions, and all other authoritative functions.
