Maldives has reported the nation's 66th death from Covid-19 on Thursday.
Health Protection Agency (HPA) confirmed the deceased as a 66-year-old local man, who had been brought to the Emergency Room at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital in an unresponsive state on Saturday night.
The man's passing was reported at 08:25pm in the evening on Saturday.
While this is the 66th Covid-19 death in the Maldives, 10 people passed away from the infection in Maldives in the month of February alone. 18 deaths have been attributed to the infection since the beginning of the new year. This is the second Covid-19 related death reported in the Maldives this week.
With the third wave of infections bringing a worrying spike in case counts, hospitalizations have also increased in comparison to what was observed during the second peak of Covid-19 last year.
Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, member of the Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC)'s Technical Advisory Group (TAG) has previously admonished recklessness on behalf of the public in treating the potentially fatal Covid-19 infection as a simple common cold. Health authorities are presently working to control the spread of Covid-19 across the capital of Male' without initiating a restrictive full-lockdown across the city.
