Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer has revealed that MVR 12 billion in projects have been assigned through national tender under the Solih administration thus far.
Minister Ameer made the remarks while speaking at a ceremony held to sign agreements to develop water and sewerage systems across 34 islands on Wednesday. Minister Ameer, noted that while MVR 12 billion in projects had proceeded through tender under the incumbent administration, this was a significantly greater expenditure than compared to the previous government. The government has has initiated development projects in several islands all over Maldives.
As such, the water and sewerage systems being developed across 34 islands of 16 atolls, are being financed through a USD 800 million line of credit facility from India's Exim Bank, through design and build agreements.
Speaking at Wednesday's signing ceremony, Minister of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Mohamed Aslam said that with the new agreements signed, the government was now conducted a total of 110 water and sewerage development projects are being undertaken across islands this year. In addition to this, Minister Aslam revealed that only 30 inhabited islands remained where agreements had not yet been signed for water and sewerage networks, and that 14 of those projects would be forwarded to the bidding process next Wednesday.
Minister Aslam also revealed that bids for 11 islands would be submitted by 23 March, and that agreements would be signed to develop water and sewerage projects for five islands very soon.
