Maldives Police Service (MPS) have confirmed five arrests in relation to Monday's fatal gang violence, which led to the death of 17-year-old Ahmed Udhayyu from GA. Maamendhoo island.
Police confirmed that two of the suspects had been remanded by 15 days while one has been detained for 10 days.
Three suspects were arrested the same night as the attack -aged 18, 23 and 27- while the remaining two aged 18 and 25 were taken into custody on Tuesday night.
While police said that remanded were the three suspects arrested on February 8, the remand hearing for the latter arrests are likely to be held separately.
In addition to this, authorities on Tuesday night transported Udhayyu's body to Male' in order to to initiate procedure to take the body abroad and conduct a post-mortem examination.
In a tweet regarding the incident, Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said that while Udhayuu had passed away from his injuries, the other youth injured on Monday following the violence in Maamendhoo remained in serious condition.
The Police's Serious and Organized Crime Department are currently investigating the case. Udhayyu is the first person to have died from gang-related violence in the Maldives, since 2019.
