The Maldives' has seen over 16,000 persons inoculated against Covid-19 since the initiation of a nationwide vaccination programme at the start of February.

According to the latest statistics by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), a total of 3,306 persons were vaccinated against the Covid-19 infection on Tuesday, with 2,792 person's receiving their shots from seven vaccination centers established in the Greater Male' area and 514 people vaccinated across 21 centers in different atolls.

With this, a total of 16,251 persons have been administered Covid-19 vaccine doses in the Maldives, with 13,418 being vaccinated in the Male' region and 2,833 people inoculated across vaccination centers in atolls.

On Tuesday, Former Vice-President and member of Ex-President Abdulla Yameen's legal team Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed also received a dose of the Covishield vaccine, folloqing the lead of Former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, who was also inoculated earlier this week. While high-profile leaders of the opposition coalition have lined up to receive Covid-19 vaccines and use their platforms to instill confidence into the science behind vaccine immunity, many members of opposition parties continue to sow doubt about the Covishield vaccine, in addition to protesting against vaccination on the streets of Male'.

Vaccination efforts are set to continue on Wednesday for those between the ages of 45 and 55 considered to be high-risk for complications from the Covid-19 virus, with Male' Social Center, Hulhumale' Flu Clinic and Villimale' Youth Center designated as vaccination centers in the Greater Male' area.

While health authorities have invested significant resources into kick-starting this nationwide Covid-19 vaccination programme in the Maldives, the number of new infections being reported daily continue to be on the rise. While this is especially true for Male' City, the Maldives' Covid-19 epicenter, authorities have asked the public to be more cautious as the nation's Covid-19 caseload could quickly grow to an unmanageable level that overburdens the healthcare system.
