SanguTV’s Sahuban Fahmy has been elected as the president of the Maldives Media Council (MMC), while Thiladhun Times’ Hussain Saqeef was elected his deputy.
While MMC held a vote to elect a new council earlier this month, the internal elections were held at their very first meeting on Tuesday.
Three members had expressed interest in the post of president; Sahuban, Ali Hussain and Shafau Hassan. Sahuban won with six votes, while Hussain received five votes and Shafau won three.
While only Saqeef applied for the post of vice president, he received 14 votes.
The Maldives Media Council elected members for the sixth term on December 5, as the tenures of the 13 members expired on December 11.
While MMC comprises of 15 members eight from the media and seven representing the public, 13 new members were elected.
The seven members elected from the media are Ali Hussain (PSM), Muizzu Ibrahim (Mihaaru Online), Adam Navaz (Vaguthu Online), Hassan Shakir Mohamed (Asdhandi Magazine), Adam Nazeer (Hathaavees Online), Sahuban Fahmy (SanguTV) and Hussain Saqeef (Thiladhun Times).
The members elected from the public are Anwar Hussain, Ibrahim Fauzy, Shafaath Habeeb, Mohamed Shafau Hassan, Fathmath Ahmed and Ahmed Moosa.
