Maldives sees record amount of tourist arrivals per day, since border reopening.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, a record total of 3,006 tourists arrived in the Maldives on December 6, which is the highest number to have been recorded per day, since the country opened borders for international travel on July 15.

A total of 12,711 tourists arrived in Maldives within the first six days of December.

Statistics go on to reveal that the country saw an average arrival rate of 1,000 per day since the ongoing month began and that 2,031 arrivals were recorded on the first day on December, alone.

This was followed by 1,455 arrivals on December 2, 1,613 arrivals the next day and 1,682 arrivals on December 4.

December 5 saw 2,924 tourist arrivals.

22 percent of the total number of tourist arrivals since border reopening are Russian tourists, which is 19,546 arrivals. A total of 12,348 arrivals were recorded from India, which contributes 13.9 percent of the total arrivals.

Some of the other top contributing tourist markets include United Kingdom, United States of America, United Arab Emirates, Germany, Ukraine, Spain, France and Brazil.

The ministry also revealed that a total of 399 tourist establishments are currently under operation, as the industry began to kick start. This includes 135 resorts, five hotels, 124 liveaboard vessels and 135 guesthouses. A total of 36,670 tourist beds are currently in operation.

After a little over three months since the government halted issuing on-arrival visas on March 27, the country’s borders were reopened after implementing several precautionary measures against the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Although arrivals were slow at first, it has been steadily increasing with the increase in flight frequencies from different international airlines operating to the country as well.

19 international airlines are currently operating flights to Maldives and seven additional flights are set to schedule flights within the ongoing month as well.

88,852 tourists arrived in the country from the date of border reopening up until December 6, whereas the country has seen a total of 471,699 tourist arrivals from January to date.
