Authorities have begun work to move the homeless in capital Male’ City, to Gulhifalhu.

State Minister at Gender Ministry, Aishath Rasheed told RaajjeTV that the programme was initiated following the increase in the number of people seen sleeping in the streets of Male’.

The programme is to be carried out together with the relevant institutions including the home ministry and police.

According to the state minister, those found to be suffering from substance abuse is to be moved a facility in Farukolhufushi, where they will undergo a drug detoxification process.

Four individuals were taken to Farukolhufushi on Sunday.

While the government has begun work to provide temporary housing to the people living in the capital’s streets, Vice President Faisal Naseem on Sunday met with officials of government institutions and spoke on the possible job opportunities for such individuals. The officials are to have spoken in support of this.

Gender Ministry has appealed for information regarding the homeless in Male’ City to be reported to the helpline 1421.

Authorities had carried out a programme to provide temporary housing to the homeless during the Covid-19 lockdown as well.
