The six suspects arrested in a police counter-terrorism operation earlier this week, have been remanded.

Police foiled a potential terror attack organized by a group of extremists following intelligence information, on Wednesday.

While the special operation was conducted near capital Male’ City and in Thimarafushi island of Thaa atoll, police confirmed the arrest of one suspect from Male’ as well as two from Thimarafushi and three from a boat in the Male’ atoll region.

Those arrested include a 20-year-old, a 21-year-old, a 29-year-old, a 31-year-old, a 34-year-old as well as an 18-year-old. While the 18-year-old was issued a five-day remand, the remaining were remanded for 15 days.

Police did not disclose any further details.

The attempted attack comes weeks after police arrested a local insurgent who returned to Maldives after fighting in the ongoing Syrian civil war.
