Maldives’ total Covid-19 cases has surpassed 12,000.

While 23 new cases were recorded on Monday, from the 1,342 samples tested within 24 hours, this brings the country’s Covid-19 tally to 12,009. With 11,132 patients having recovered from the virus, there are currently 830 active Covid-19 cases in the island nation including in 14 residential islands and 25 resorts.

There have been 40 Covid-19 related deaths.

21 of the cases announced on Monday are from the greater Male’ region, where most of the Covid-19 cases have been detected which forced authorities to declare a lockdown in the capital in April. While the lockdown has since been lifted, there is still a curfew in the city.

52 patients are currently seeking treatment at hospitals, eight less than the previous day.

The cases announced on Monday include 20 locals and three foreigners.

While there has recently been an increase in cases reported from inhabited islands, as a precautionary measure people traveling to outlying islands from the capital region are required to quarantine for a 14-day period. However, while guesthouses were allowed to reopen last month, there are no such requirements for tourists.
