Ahmed Ibrahim Didi, now 43, has been found guilty of killing his uncle Ali Abdulla.
The body of the businessman, reported missing after a burglary at his general store, was found in an abandoned taro field in southern Addu City in March 2016. Ali Abdulla was strangled to death.
Didi became the primary suspect and was arrested a few days later, and indicted on first degree murder charges.
At the hearing held on Thursday, the Criminal Court found him “guilty beyond a reasonable doubt” under Article 51 (h) of the constitution. Didi has been sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison.
Back in 2016, police told reporters that the murder was motivated by greed; the money stolen from the victim's shop was discovered buried in a house linked to Didi.
While only Didi was initially charged over the murder, three others were charged with accessory to murder. Their trials are ongoing.
