Maldives sees tourist arrivals from 125 countries, in September

Over 9,000 tourists from 125 countries arrived in the Maldives in September.

Noting that a total of 18,867 tourist arrivals have been seen since the country reopened borders in July, Maldives Immigration on Sunday released arrival details for September.

While 9,538 tourists arrived in the island nation within the past month, this is a 25 percent increase compared to August.

Most number of arrivals seen on a single day was 696, while lowest was t 97.

According to statistics, an average of 100 arrivals have been seen per day since border reopening.

  • Russia - 2,065 arrivals
  • United Arab Emirates - 1,029 arrivals
  • United States - 935 arrivals
  • United Kingdom - 625 arrivals
  • Spain - 466 arrivals
  • Brazil - 444 arrivals
  • Germany - 362 arrivals
  • France - 279 arrivals
  • India - 262 arrivals
  • Egypt - 232 arrivals

While Russian airlines, Aeroflot resumed flights two the country last month, airport officials said that there has been an increase in tourist arrivals since.

7,628 arrivals were seen in August, while 1,769 tourist arrivals were recorded from 15-30 July.

While the tourist arrivals has not been as high as predicted since border reopening, newly appointed Tourism Minister, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom recently said that the number is expected to reach 120,000 by December.

The country, as many others, was forced to close borders following the Covid-19 pandemic, on March 27. This has had a huge impact on the economy, as the island nation’s most lucrative industry was put on standstill for nearly four months until borders were reopened on July 15.

Maldives welcomed a record breaking 1.7 million tourist arrivals in 2019, and a two million target was made for 2020.
