The third amendment to the Prosecutor General’s Act has been ratified.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih ratified the amendment on Wednesday, following which it has been publicized in the government gazette.
The People’s Majlis passed the third amendment during its 33rd sitting held on August 31.
The new amendment vests more independence for the Prosecutor General and lists conditions the Prosecutor General must adhere to in executing the Prosecutor General’s Office duties.
It also highlights conditions to follow when engaging in business or other activities that may compromise the quality of work or ethical standards of the PGO.
Following the ratification of the amendment, it allows for legal action to be taken on failure to comply with the PGO’s ethical principles or do their due diligence on the part of PGO staff members.
Under the amendment, the Prosecutor General will be required to submit an asset declaration form as well.
