Maldives and the United States have signed an agreement titled the ‘Framework for US Department of Defense - Maldives Ministry of Defence, Defense and Security Relationship.’

Defence Minister Mariya Didi signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldivian government at the ceremony held in Philadelphia, while Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for South Asia at the US Defense Department, Reed Werner, represented the country.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister Mariya said that this Framework “will add immense value to the excellent partnership” between both nations “especially in the defence and security domain.”

She also stressed the importance of bilateral dialogue and engagement “against a backdrop of threats such as piracy, violent extremism, terrorism, and illicit trafficking, to the peace and security of the Indo-Pacific and the Indian Ocean region.”

She added that these are “tied to the best interests of both nations.”

Ministry of Defence said that the ‘Framework for US Department of Defense - Maldives Ministry of Defence, Defense and Security Relationship’ outlines a range of bilateral activities including senior-level dialogues, discussions, engagements and opportunities in areas such as maritime domain awareness, natural distasters and humanitarian relief operations.

The ministry noted that this “is a positive step towards furthering the close ties that exist between the two countries.”

The US Department of Defense said that this Framework “sets forth both countries’ intent to deepen engagement and cooperation in support of maintaining peace and security in the Indian Ocean, and marks an important step forward in the defense partnership.”

During the meeting held after the signing ceremony, Minister Mariya and DASD Werner also discussed U.S. support for the Maldives’ response to Covid-19 efforts as well as on areas for future cooperation.

Both sides also reiterated their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific that promotes the security and prosperity of all nations in the region.
