People’s Majlis has approved three out of the eight names forwarded for the vacant positions at the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
The three, Aminath Shifaath Abdul Razzaq, Moomina Waheed and Dr. Ahmed Adham Abdulla, were approved by the committee on human rights and gender after further review which included interview sessions.
Noting that these three individuals have the capability to fulfill responsibilities at the commission, as per their educational background and experience, the committee approved them last Sunday.
58 MPs voted in favour of Shifaath’s appointment to HRCM, while Moomina received 61 votes and Adham 59 votes.
The President’s Office opened the application for four membership posts at HRCM on July 6, following the resignation of three members as well as the expiration of one’s term on September 12.
The three members -Aminath Enas, Aishath Afreen Mohamed, and Moosa Ali Kaleyfaanu- resigned in July amid impeachment motions at the Peope’s Majlis.
Vice President Mohamed Zahid was removed from position through a parliamentary vote, in late July; his post is yet to be filled.
The Human Rights Commission Act states that HRCM must comprise of five members.
