All orphanages in the capital region are operating over capacity.
State Minister at the Gender Ministry, Aishath Rasheed revealed this while speaking to RaajjeTV’s Fala Surukhee programme last week.
Noting that all orphanages in the capital region are operating over capacity, Aishath said that this is the worst at the Fiyavathi orphanage in Hulhumale’.
As such, she said that Fiyavathi, which has a capacity of 80, currently accommodates about 120 children.
However, Aishath stressed that operations are going smooth despite this and praised the arrangements there.
She assured that the orphanages are safe for the children.
Furthermore, the state minister said that their aim is not to keep children at these facilities but rather to facilitate other safe living arrangements.
Fiyavathi was officially opened on February 17, 2016.
