A fire has broken out in a building located in Boduthakurufaanu Magu in Maldives capital Malé City.

The Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) reported that the fire broke out in the building where State Bank of India (SBI) is located.

A team of MNDF Fire and Rescue officers are currently active in the Artificial Beach region to quell the fire.

Officials are currently working to evacuate residents in nearby buildings, to which the fire spread observably fast.

MNDF was able to control the spread of the fire close to 11:30pm, after the fire had already spread to a vast area.

Witnesses at the scene report that the fire first broke out inside a café, Tiolo on Boduthakurufaanu Magu, which spread to the top floors and to the SBI building, fortunately, authorities revealed that no injuries have been reported thus far.

Authorities continue to appeal on the public to refrain from gathering in the region.

The country's defense minister, Mariya Ahmed Didi has revealed that work is underway to provide shelter for those affected by the fire, if required.
