Speaker of the People’s Majlis, Mohamed Nasheed has departed on an unofficial trip to the United Kingdom.
Main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) revealed this via Twitter, early Friday morning.
The speaker departed on Friday morning and the reason as well as his return date, have not been disclosed.
Nasheed’s spouse and children reside in the United Kingdom and the speaker has visited them on previous occasions as well.
Nasheed has departed on an unofficial visit at a time the People’s Majlis is scheduled to hold the final sitting of the ongoing session on Monday.
Earlier, the parliament revealed that the second session for 2020 will conclude on August 27, Thursday.
However, during Wednesday’s sitting, Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla cited the parliament regulations giving way for holidays on the last Monday of the month of holidays. She added that upcoming Monday is the last one of the month, and if MPs do not take leave they could proceed with eight motions submitted to the floor.
In light of this, the parliament holidays will begin after Monday’s sitting.
After a one-month recess, the parliament is expected to reconvene in October.
