People’s Majlis has approved Mohamed Khaleel as Maldives’ non-resident ambassador to Bahrain.
Khaleel, who is the current ambassador to Saudi Arabia and non-resident ambassador to Oman, was approved at Monday’s parliament sitting, with the 57 MPs voting in favour.
Parliament’s committee on national security and foreign relations decided that Khaleel was qualified for the job, at a meeting held on August 17. He received an unanimous vote from those present at the committee meeting.
Khaleel, who has been the Maldives ambassador to Saudi Arabia since June 2019, was appointed as the non-resident ambassador to Oman in November.
The Maldives’ Ambassador to Saudi Arabia is also the country’s representative at the Organization of Islamic Affairs (OIC). 82 lawmakers had voted in favour of Khaleel’s appointment to this post, in October 2019.
He has been serving the government since 1983.
As per Article 115 (l) of the Constitution, the president is entrusted “to appoint members of diplomatic missions to foreign countries and international organizations in consultation with the People’s Majlis.”
