Maldives recorded nearly 200 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, raising the total infections in the country since the outbreak of the pandemic to 6,564.

This is the highest increase in daily infections, in days.

Also on Friday, an additional coronavirus-related death was reported, bringing the death toll to 26; a 62-year-old Bangladeshi national passed away on Friday night, he tested positive for the infection on August 16.

Further, 97 recoveries were reported on Friday bringing total recoveries to 4,012.

The country currently has 2,527 active Covid-19 cases in the island nation.

With five additional patients admitted at hospitals, there are currently 166 Covid-19 patients seeking treatment at hospitals.

191 of the cases reported on Friday are from the greater Malé region while three are from outlying islands; the islands where Covid-19 cases were detected on Friday are Omadhoo island in Alif Dhaal atoll, Inguraidhoo island in Raa atoll and Gulhi island in Kaafu atoll.

The cases announced on Friday include 167 locals, 16 Bangladeshis, seven Indian nationals as well as one each from Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand and Italy.

The country resumed international flights in mid-July, and some tourists have tested positive for the infection as well. There are active cases in 10 resort islands currently.
