A 52-year-old local woman has passed away from Covid-19.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said that the woman arrived at Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) on Saturday evening “with breathing difficulties,” and that she passed away at around 11:20pm.
This is the 17th Covid-19 death recorded in the Maldives.
The island nation saw a surge in Covid-19 cases in July, after the government began the third phase of lockdown easing. 156 new cases, including a record 134 locals, were confirmed on Saturday alone.
Health officials have expressed concern over the increase in patients requiring treatment at hospitals, as well as over the “increasing trend in infections in the elderly age group.”
However, there are no plans to return to a state of lockdown yet.
