Maldives Police Service (MPS) has launched investigations into a case where a woman with special needs was raped in southernmost Addu City.

Police received the report of a 48-year-old woman with special needs, falling victim to sexual assault, on Friday morning.

Authorities are yet to make any arrests in connection to the rape case. Further investigations are ongoing.

Sexual assault cases have been on the rise of late, despite the country being locked in the battle against the global Covid-19 pandemic and since the Kanduhulhudhoo rape case where a two-year old toddler fell victim to sexual abuse by her family members earlier this year, individuals voicing against such heinous crimes, have increased.
