Foreign envoys from three countries paid farewell calls

A number of foreign envoys to the Maldives have bid farewell to the Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid following the completion of their terms.

During a meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, the Ambassador of Germany to the Maldives, Jörn Rohde paid a farewell call to FM Shahid.

FM Shahid congratulated Rohde on the completion of his successful tenure and expressed gratitude for his contribution in strengthening the long-standing relations between both countries.

The Maldives minister also expressed gratitude for the personal commitment he offered to democracy consolidation, institutional reform, and good governance in the Maldives.

Extending hope for strengthened ties between the Maldives and Germany, Rohde conveyed gratitude to the Maldivian government for the close cooperation.

The meeting was joined by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel and Director General at the ministry, Shiuneen Rasheed as well as Representative of the Honorary Consul of Germany in Maldives Shirhan Mahir.

Ambassador of Switzerland to the Maldives Hanspeter Mock

The Ambassador of Switzerland to the Maldives Hanspeter Mock was also among the three ambassadors to have paid farewell calls on FM Shahid.

As such, during a telephone call held on Thursday, Mock extended gratitude to the government for the close cooperation and expressed hope to strengthen ties between both countries in the future.

FM Shahid reiterated the sentiment, having thanked him for his hard work in boosting the ties between Maldives and Switzerland and congratulating him for the completion of his successful tenure.

Mock expressed that the opening of a Swiss Honorary General Consulate in the Maldives is “only one” of the positive recent developments in our excellent relations.

Further, both ministers went on to exchange updates regarding the ongoing situation surrounding the global Covid-19 pandemic in their respective countries and discussed ways to overcome the economic and financial impacts of the pandemic.

The Foreign Minister wished the Ambassador the best in his future endeavors.

Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the Republic of Maldives, Dr. Saeed Mohamed Ali Alshamsi

In a virtual farewell call received by the Maldives minister from the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the Republic of Maldives, Dr. Saeed Mohamed Ali Alshamsi, FM Shahid expressed his appreciation to the government of the UAE for continued support and assistance to the Maldives as an “invaluable development partner”.

He highlighted that increased bilateral exchanges have taken place over the recent years.

FM Shahid went on to thank the UAE Ambassador for his efforts towards improving the Maldives-UAE relations during his tenure.

He further acknowledged the ambassador’s important role in establishing the first Resident Embassy of the UAE in the Maldives.

During the call, Alshamsi reiterated gratitude to the government of Maldives for the support extended during his tenure and expressed confidence that the relationship between the Maldives and UAE will grow stronger in the years ahead.

Alshamsi was appointed as the first Resident Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to the Republic of Maldives, and presented his credentials to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on March 25, 2019.
