People’s Majlis has passed an amendment bill to the Export Import Act.
While the amendment proposed by Gan constituency MP Mohamed Wisam sought to cut import duty for certain household appliances and materials required for the development of various industries.
The bill was reviewed by the whole house committee, whose report sought to introduce a duty cut from materials being imported through the regional ports of Kulhudhuffushi and Addu City.
While this also included reducing duties on tobacco and alcohol, Manadhoo constituency MP Ahmed Haroon proposed against this. 57 lawmakers voted in favour of his proposal.
Further, North-Kulhudhuffushi constituency MP Yasir Abdul Latheef proposed to increase the duty from energy drinks, from MVR 33.64 to MVR 6.55.
58 parliamentarians voted in favour of the increasing the duty from energy drinks.
While the whole house committee reported also noted 13 amendments, the People’s Majlis passed the amendment bill with the votes of 58 MPs.
