Maldives Police Service (MPS) has concluded the investigation into the case of the sexual assault of three elderly women in Addu City and has sought charges against the accused, to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO).
The case, which surfaced in late May, was forwarded to PGO Thursday.
Arrested in the case under accusations of attempting to sexually assault three elderly women in the southernmost city is a 30-year-old. The man is accused of being involved in sexually assaulting three different women over 60 years of age.
On June 16, the Meedhoo Magistrate Court had ordered for the rape suspect to be transferred to house arrest.
The PGO requested the court to review the case, and it issued a fresh order to remand the man at a locations decided by the Ministry of Home Affairs, on Wednesday.
The man was arrested on May 28 under a court order, after the authority received reports of him attempting to sexually assault a 64-year-old woman in Meedhoo district of the southernmost city.
The same day the man had sexually assaulted two other women, a 66-year-old and a 65-year-old.
Police earlier urged the public to report crime if they are in the know, without hesitation.
A number of sexual abuse cases are being reported from regions of the island nation, at a time the country is battling the Covid-19 pandemic, which has infected over 2,000 individuals in the Maldives and taken eight lives.
