Members of the Government Oversight Committee of the 19th Parliament have called for the resignation of Minister of Environment and Energy, Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan.
Discussions were held regarding the water and sewerage system in Fuvahmulah City during a committee meeting where the minister and FENAKA Corporation’s Managing Director Ahmed Saeed were summoned for questioning.
Debates heated up during the meeting and it was followed by a call for the minister’s resignation, by Hussain Mohamed Didi, central-Fuvahmulah MP and member of the committee.
This was followed by an assertion by the minister that the ministry is mandated to present recommendations regarding issues with the environment, water and sewerage projects. The minister stressed that things related to infrastructure do not come under the mandate of the ministry.
MP Hussain spit back by asserting that the mandate that comes under the environment ministry is very clear and questioned the minister whether these things are being maintained.
Other committee members also expressed discontent over the minister’s responses.
At a time the residents of the city are expressing concern over the water and sewerage issue, FENAKA MD revealed that these issues are a result of incomplete procedures when the system was handed over and due to poor quality.
MD Saeed assured that these issues will be resolved within six months.
