Housing Minister Aminath Athifa has resigned from the post.
RaajjeMV understands that the minister sent in her resignation about two days ago, due to heath issues.
Despite handing in her resignation, Athifa had reported to work on Tuesday.
Athifa, appointed as housing minister through a slot for the ruling coalition partner Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) in December 2018, had received immense criticism from the public in recent days. This was intensified after she had to retract a statement given to a parliament committee regarding housing flats, due to “a mistake”.
There have since been calls for her removal from the post, with a senior official of the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) even submitting a letter to the parliament over the matter.
Athifa is not the only minister that has been subject to this, there have been calls for the resignation of Fisheries Minister Zaha Waheed as well.
She is the second cabinet minister appointed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, to resign. Former Gender Minister Shidhatha Shareef resigned in February this year, amid a potential impeachment motion.
