Two Maldivian men have been arrested for sexually assaulting a minor.

Maldives Police Service (MPS) received reports that a 16-year-old boy was being assaulted from island in the north province.

The North Police Division of the Maldives comprising of Noonu, Raa, Baa and Lhaviyani atolls, received the report on June 4.

Upon investigation, police found that the minor was to have fallen victim to sexual assault over the course of several days.

Two men, 28 and 37, were arrested under a court order on June 9 in connection to the sexual assault case.

Further details regarding the island and atoll have not been disclosed to ensure confidentiality.

The case is under further investigation and police earlier assured that they probe cases related to sexual assault against children, as serious cases.

Authorities earlier revealed that several cases of child abuse were identified through the Maldives Child Protection Database (MCPD) during the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, there have been concerns regarding child abuse risks amid the pandemic.

A number of sexual abuse cases are being reported from regions of the island nation, at a time the country is battling the global pandemic, steadily infecting hundreds in the Maldives.
