The government has received a donation of over 20,000 Covid-19 testing kits, by Universal Enterprises.

The Ministry of Health revealed that they received 20,200 Covid-19 testing kits from one of the largest firms in the Maldives, Universal as an assistance to strengthen the government’s Covid-19 response efforts.

Receiving the donation on Saturday, the Minister of Health, Abdulla Ameen expressed gratitude to senior officials and staff behind the donation, having shed light on the support received by the conglomerate.

Universal operates the largest range of resorts in the country and is among the many contributors towards the Maldivian government’s efforts to curb the spread of the outbreak.

As such, other donators of medical supplies and protective equipment include the World Health Organization, having donated over 21,000 testing kits to the island nation thus far.

Further, Czech billionaires Daniel Kretinsky and Jiri Smejc who also own Velaa Private Island Resort, also made a generous donation alongside Singaporean Billionaire Ong Beng Seng as the governments of India, China and Bangladesh among many others.

This comes at a time doctors have been stressing that authorities will be unable to identify the extent of the spread of the virus if the country’s testing capacity is not reinforced.

Currently, Covid-19 testing is carried out at ADK Hospital, Maldives Police Service and Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and authorities are further working to increase testing capacity, including across outlying atolls as well.
