The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has revealed that a project to build 1,700 housing units will be mobilized once the Maldives opens its borders to restart the tourism industry.

Joining a virtual meeting of the National Development and Heritage Committee of the People’s Majlis on Thursday, Housing Minister Aminath Athifa revealed that they will lay the foundation for a total of 7,700 housing units and the project will be mobilized in the Greater Malé Region.

Further, the minister added that they laid the foundation for 1,700 housing units within the first week of the lockdown declared across the Greater Malé Region and that agreements were signed to develop 2,000 more housing units.

Regarding the 4,000 housing units being developed in Hulhumalé, Minister Athifa stated that they are expecting to receive approval from the Exim Bank soon.

Earlier, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had noted that previous assessments indicate that about 20,000 families in the region require shelter.

Providing shelter for these individuals is one of the many pledges made by the president.
