A number of white alerts have been issued across several regions expected to experience squally weather.
The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) issued a new advisory on Friday afternoon, predicting heavy rain showers and thunderstorms with winds gusting up to 40 miles per hour over the regions between Haa Alif atoll to Lhaviyani atoll and Meemu atoll to Laamu atoll.
The advisory is in effect from 1:45pm to 7pm.
Generally, the department has predicted the country to experience fairly widespread rain showers with occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms at times.
Further, MET predicted surface winds to vary from southwest to westerly at 10 – 20 miles per hour in the north as well as central Maldives and south to southwesterly at 8 – 18 miles per hour in the south.
Winds are expected to gust up to 45 miles per hour during showers, throughout the entire country.
Seas are predicted to be moderate becoming rough during showers throughout the country and urges caution against the adverse weather conditions as swell wave surges are also predicted in the south and central atolls during high tides.
This comes at a time the department has been issuing numerous alerts, both at white and yellow levels throughout the country, as the island nation continues to experience strong monsoon activities that are wreaking havoc across some regions including Addu and Fuvahmulah cities, where strong winds are tearing off roofs and uprooting trees and heavy showers are flooding the streets.
