Covid-19 community transmission
"30 – 50 Covid-19 cases per day, this is a low number" says Dr. Afzal
The cases reported on a daily basis have reduced
The number of frontline workers who contracted the disease is also low
Dr. Afzal stated that the number of new clusters is also low

Epidemiologist at the Health Protection Agency (HPA), Dr. Ibrahim Afzal has predicted the number of Covid-19 cases to remain between 30 – 50 on a daily basis, which is relatively low.

Speaking to press during a briefing held at the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) on Friday night, the Epidemiologist revealed that these numbers are low for a daily basis.

Dr. Afzal noted that these numbers are the baseline for the pandemic, in the Maldives. Every country has a baseline for diseases considered an epidemic, he added.

If the cases remain at a separate level, this may be considered a baseline. Considering the population of Malé, 30 – 50 cases per day is not a high level in comparison to such diseases”

Further, the doctor highlighted that the number of frontline workers testing positive for the infection is also dropping of recent.

Similarly, the number of new clusters discovered by authorities is also low currently, said Afzal.

Out of those who have been infected thus far, only 65% have shown symptoms of the virus which is a total of 837 according to recent statistics.

Authorities currently prioritize those who exhibit symptoms of the virus, when carrying out sampling and testing. Due to this, a number of cases might go undiscovered, stressed the doctor.
