An emergency motion has been submitted to the People’s Majlis regarding the severe damages being caused by strong monsoon activities in southernmost Addu City.

Submitted by the Feydhoo constituency MP, Mohamed Nihad during Monday’s online parliamentary sitting, the motion seeks to extend the required assistance to the southernmost city at the earliest.

The motion was passed for debate with the votes from 44 members out of the 53 members present.

The motion, submitted under Article 170 of the People’s Majlis regulations has sought from the authorities to prioritize and step up efforts to secure the property and households of the people from the adverse impacts of extreme weather conditions during the monsoon season.

The MP called on the government to take immediate measures to reduce the impacts of strong monsoon activities on households and properties of the people, especially Feydhoo residents, who have suffered damage, heavier than ever before, due to the adverse weather conditions in the south.

He further pushed the government to provide swift financial aid to the residents who have had their households affected.

Opening debate for the motion, the Speaker of Parliament and Former President, Mohamed Nasheed added that several people have raised concern over the noticeable changes to the natural activities caused during the monsoon season such as swell waves, rain showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds.

A total of 544 households in Feydhoo district of the southernmost city have been affected by the squally weather conditions over the south.

Moreover, 28 households in Hithadhoo, 20 households in Maradhoo and 44 in Maradhoo Feydhoo have been affected by the monsoon showers.
