Maldives is to send an additional 200 Bangladeshi nationals’ home.

The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC)’s spokesperson Mohamed Mabrook Aziz revealed this at Sunday night’s Covid-19 press briefing, adding that a national airline flight has been arranged for their repatriation.

While over 400 Bangladeshis were sent home via two flights, a Biman Bangladesh Airline and Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) flight, Mabrook said that about 15 were unable to leave due to documentation issues.

353 Bangladeshis left via the Biman Airline flight on Saturday while 67 departed via the BAF flight on Sunday. The former was chartered by the Maldivian government.

Both flights arrived in the Maldives with essentials for the Maldivian people.

About 70 undocumented Bangladeshi workers were repatriated via a BAF flight back in April as well.

The foreign ministry said that the Bangladeshi High Commission in the Maldives has been assisting in the repatriation efforts.

The Bangladeshi government has provided various assistance to the Maldives' Covid-19 response efforts, in addition to supplying essentials such as medical equipment and food.

As such, they recently provided assistance in repatriating Maldivians in Bangladesh and Nepal through a special military aircraft. Bangladesh has also sent an experienced medical team to the island nation.
