The Lockdown Committee has decided to halt care packages from outlying islands to capital city Malé for the remainder of May.

Following the committee’s decision to halt sending care packages to the capital city from May 15 – 31, the Local Government Authority (LGA) has informed presidents of city, atoll and island councils of the decision.

In a letter addressed council presidents on Tuesday, the LGA noted that the Lockdown Committee has asked cities and islands in outlying atolls to halt sending care packages to the capital city following a prediction of a Covid-19 surge in the next few days.

This is being done for the safety and security of citizens, said LGA.

This measure is to be followed for a period of 14 days, from May 15 – 31.

Following this decision, the Covid-10 task forces established across the scatter of islands in the country have been urged to ensure this measure is followed and to pay special heed to this measure when permitting trips.

The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) revealed the task force’s prediction of the surge in an earlier press conference, highlighting that the country is headed towards a Covid-19 surge in the next two weeks, for which the public needs to be cautious of.

The Maldives Covid-19 case count sits at 904 as of Wednesday morning.
