National Covid-19 taskforce has said that movement and travel restriction measures have had “a positive impact on changing the rate of [Covid-19] spread”.
While the current projections show “a surge” in number of cases on May 31, the taskforce discussed these projections at Monday night’s virtual meeting.
The President’s Office, via Twitter, said that this is “difficult, but important to maintain strict level of precautionary measures”.
The country’s Covid-19 projections have significantly reduced following the imposition of a lockdown the greater Malé region, however, authorities are still concerned over the estimated numbers as it could overload the health system. According to revise projects, May 31st will see at least 1,523 new cases.
With this, the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) has urged the government to strengthen Covid-19 precautionary measures.
While the country’s capital has been on lockdown, the entire country is on partial lockdown with travel between islands banned without authorization. People are allowed to travel back to their home islands after a 14-day quarantine period, however, authorities have said that this might be halted if the situation worsens.
