Residents of Thulushoo island in Kaafu atoll were protesting late Monday night, calling to “move” those identified as contacts of Covid-19 confirmed cases.
While three migrant workers have tested positive for the virus in Thulusdhoo, the island’s council President Ahmed Anees spoke regarding the protest on RaajjeTV’s Covid-19 coverage.
Noting that they were protesting in front of a house that has been quarantined in relation to the Covid-19 cases, Anees said that one out of the two samples taken from the house had come back positive. He added that there are 12 others residing there, and that the protesters were calling to “move them all” with the individual that tested positive.
The individuals in this house are contacts of two Bangladeshi nationals that were on the island through the State Electric Company (STELCO) on April 15, and had tested positive for Covid-19 later.
Anees said that there were about 30 protesters, mostly youth, and that council officials and police officers had urged them to stop the protest and return home.
Further highlighting that their concerns were heard, Anees said that the protesters were informed that there are protocols to be followed in transferring patients and contacts, and that the council has been following these protocols.
While Thulusdhoo has been under monitoring since April 21, the council president added that the prolonged measures is a concern for the residents as well.
