Maalhos Magistrate Court has remanded the 29-year-old who was arrested for violating the travel restrictions placed in light of the current Covid-19 situation, by 15 days.

This was revealed by the Maldives Police Service (MPS) media.

The 29-year-old was arrested while hiding in Dharavandhoo island in Baa atoll after leaving Maalhos island in a canoe boat without the required authorization.

This comes at a time several individuals have been violating the travel restrictions in the outlying atolls, placed by the Director General of Public Health, Maimoona Aboobakuru.

Two were arrested for going fishing without the required permit in Maafaru island of Noonu atoll and four individuals were also arrested from Miladhoo island. Other arrested include three who entered Bilehfahi island while it was under monitoring and others who entered Landhoo island from Manadhoo in Noonu atoll.

Unauthorized travel between islands has been banned after the discovery of a Covid-19 community transmission in the capital Malé City on April 15. Since then, Covid-19 cases have been spiking in both the capital and outlying islands.
