Maldive Police Service (MPS) has taken four individuals into police custody, for violating the nationwide travel restrictions imposed by the government as a precaution against the Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

Police revealed that four Maldivian men, aged 23, 30, 36 and 38 respectively, were taken into police custody close to 4pm on Wednesday.

The four are to have travelled out of Miladhoo island in Noonu atoll without acquiring the required permit from the island’s Covid-19 task force and desk officers.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) earlier placed monitoring measures on the island.

They were arrested upon returning to the islands.

The case is under further investigation.

Several such violations have been surfacing of recent and a number of arrests have also been made in connection to these cases.

Unauthorized travel between islands have been prohibited after the discovery of a Covid-19 community transmission in Maldives capital, Malé City on April 15.
