The minister joined the press conference by the National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) on Monday afternoon, where he provided the latest updates of the tourism sector, regarding the Covid-19 pandemic.

As such, the minister noted that there are currently 187 tourists from 50 different countries worldwide, stranded in the Maldives.

Authorities are closely monitoring the condition of these tourists in cooperation with tourist police as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Highlighting that these tourists were stranded in 10 resorts, Waheed noted that they have since been moved to Dream Island in cooperation with relevant authorities.

All of these tourists are doing well and in good condition, said Waheed.

The minister went on to highlight that over 16 tourist establishments have been allocated as quarantine and isolation facilities due to the pandemic.

Ever since the discovery of the first case of community transmission in Maldives capital, Malé on April 15, the Greater Malé Region has been locked down until April 30 as the number of confirmed cases continue to spike. There have been a total of 220 confirmed cases in the Maldives as of Monday evening and as numbers increase, authorities are working to establish more quarantine facilities across the island nation.
