The Maldives Meteorological Services (MET Office) has issued a white alert and yellow alert across regions of the Maldives.

As such, the department issued a white alert in the regions between Meemu atoll to southernmost Addu City, after predicting heavy rain and thunderstorms to prevail across the region from 11:30am to 4:30pm.

Further, MET issued a yellow alert across the regions between Fuvahmulah City and Addu City on Thursday as well.

During the period between 12:10pm to 4pm, torrential rain and thunderstorms are expected to prevail over the regions.

As the monsoon season has begun, the department predicts seas to be slight becoming moderate during showers throughout the country and scatters of rain with isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms to prevail over most parts.

In addition, surface winds are expected to vary between southwest to westerly at 6 – 16 miles per hour, with winds gusting 35 miles per hour during showers.

MET urged all individuals to be cautious of the adverse weather.
