Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has appealed on the people to follow the instructions of the health experts and show unity during a time the Covid-19 fears have been intensifying across the globe, as well as the Maldives.

During an exclusive phone interview on RaajjeTV’s Covid-19 coverage, the former president noted that Maldivians have always shown unity and solidarity whenever the country faced such difficult and trying situations.

As such he shed light on the unity shown by the people during the Cholera, Shigellosis as well as the Tsunami crisis and highlighted that the same effort to cooperate with the authorities and show solidarity is needed to overcome the Covid-19 crisis.

Gayoom stressed that this is the time for patience and urged the people to turn towards Allah, the most important thing to do right now is to believe in the regulations set by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and adhere to them.

Maldives is in its current situation due to the precautionary measures enforced by the authorities, in the absence of which, the situation would have been worse than it currently is, said the former leader.

During a time the Covid-19 situation has been worsening, with a record number of infections reported in the Maldives capital within the course of the past few days, Gayoom has urged citizens to help each other out and show national unity, as they always have.
