Three people were injured in a scuffle at Maafushi Prison on Saturday.
Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) said that prisoners in Unit 9 of Maafushi Jail had forcefully exited the cell when guards arrived with food.
Three people were injured including two corrections’ officers and one prisoner.
Noting that the situation has been controlled, MCS has said that the matter is being investigated further.
Home Minister Abdulla Imran travelled to Maafushi island shortly after, to inquire on the incident, along with the Commissioner of Prisons, Ahmed Mohamed.
Afterwards, Minister Imran tweeted praised the officers for handling the situation without serious injuries and added that the government’s aim is to uphold human rights standards of those in custody and protect the prison community.
The incident comes shortly after the home ministry revealed that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had pardoned 105 prisoners, amid Covid-19 concerns.
