Majlis to forward recommendations to president, reg. economic impact of Covid-19
Investigations are underway for several things at parliament committees

The People’s Majlis is to forward recommendations regarding the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic that is sweeping across the globe, to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Speaker of Parliament and former President, Mohamed Nasheed, revealed that this at a press conference on Thursday, noting that this will be done after investigations conducted by the parliament committees.

Several Majlis committees are probing the impacts on the country’s economy to reach solutions which may be implemented.

Some of this includes analyzing when the Maldives is expected to see tourist arrivals, when the country’s economy is expected to rise as well as examining changes being brought to the employment sector and food security.

With this being said, the speaker revealed that the parliament is expected to reach a decision after reviewing these matters and forward recommendations to the president, within the following week.

This comes at a time the president has also stressed on the severe impacts of the worldwide pandemic on the country’s economy as a small island developing nation that depends heavily on tourism as a main source of income.

While Maldives has decided to quarantine and test all locals returning from abroad, issuing of on-arrival visas have been suspended from Friday.hem.

Thus far, there have been 19 confirmed cases in the Maldives out of which 13 have recovered and four patients, all Maldivians who returned from the United Kingdom, are being treated.
