Maldives has extended its temporary travel restrictions on foreigners arriving from Bangladesh.

While the restrictions were initially placed from 10-24 March, Covid-19 spokesperson Mohamed Mabrook Aziz on Monday revealed that this has been extended for a period to be determined.

Bangladesh is one of the 11 restrictions where Maldives has temporarily banned passengers from as authorities works to curb a spread in the country. The others are; Mainland China, Iran, North Gyeongsang and South Gyeongsang provinces of South Korea, Italy, Spain, Il-de-France and Grand Est in France, Malaysia, United Kingom, Sri Lanka and Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden- Württemberg of Germany.

However, the restrictions are not on citizens from these countries, rather “all passengers and crew with travel history to the countries or regions within the last 14 days”.

In its efforts to protect the people from the pandemic that is sweeping across the globe, Maldives’ government has decided to quarantine all incoming passengers except tourists. However, tourists will only be allowed to travel to their resort destination from the airport, and will only be allowed off the resort for their departure from the country. All travel between resorts and inhabited islands have been halted, as well as tourist excursions.

There has been a total of 13 positive Covid-19 cases in the country since March 7. While they are all foreigners, five have since recovered and their nationalities were disclosed on Monday.

While three Italians and one each from Turkey and South Africa have tested negative, the remaining eight patients are undergoing treatment and in stable condition. They are; six Italians and one each from Germany and United Kingdom.
