Majlis approves Akram for Elections Commission
Akram played a major role in the commission’s success in smoothly carrying out the process of past elections
Akram received the most number of votes from committee members, at 12
His current term as Vice President comes to an end on 23 March

The People’s Majlis has on Wednesday passed to elect Ahmed Akram as a member of the Elections Commission (EC).

Akram’s appointment was passed with the voted from 72 members who took part in the vote.

The main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) issued a two-line whip to elect Akram to the position.

Akram’s name was mentioned in the report by the Parliament’s Committee on Independent Institutions which took on the case forwarded by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The names passed by the committee and forwarded to the parliament floor are;

1. Ahmed Akram who received 12 votes in favor,

2. Ahmed Fayaz Hassan who received 11 votes in favor,

3. Mariyam Haneefa Khalid, who received 11 votes in favor and

4. Ahmed Mansoor who received 10 votes in favor.

Akram’s tenure as Vice President of the commission comes to an end on 23 March, as such, Akram is vying for a second term.

Akram played a major role in the commission’s success in smoothly carrying out the process of the Presidential Election of 2018 and Parliamentary Elections of 2019.
