Covid-19: Maldives suspends prayers at mosques in capital and all resorts
The decision to suspend prayers at mosques was made as a precautionary measure against Covid-19
There are no bans on individuals praying at the mosques, however, all are encouraged to pray at home
President Solih announced the decision to close off government offices from 19 to 26 March, on Tuesday

Authorities have decided to suspend prayers at mosques in the capital and resorts, including Friday prayer, as a precautionary measure against novel coronavirus.

Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Ahmed Zahir made the announcement at a press conference on Wednesday morning.

While prayer gatherings at mosques have been suspended until March 28, there are no bans on individuals praying at the mosques. However, all are urged to continue prayers at home for the duration.

The Islamic minister added that same procedures will apply to all island across the world, should be they be locked down.

While capital Malé is not under lockdown, several restrictions have been placed including the suspension of guest check-ins at hotels and guest houses in the city. Resorts are under a partial lockdown; travel between resorts and inhabited islands are currently banned, and only check-ins and check-outs are allowed to enter and leave the islands.

The ministry’s announcement comes after President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s decision to close all government offices for 10 days (including weekends) starting from March 19. Prayers at mosques have been suspended for this period as well.

Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday, suspended prayers at all mosques except the Two Holy Mosques in Mecca and Medina.
