Parliament Speaker and Former President Mohamed Nasheed has asserted that anti-Islamic organizations will not be given the opportunity to be active in the country.

The assertion was made via a Twitter post as a response to former MP for Bilehdhoo constituency, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel who claimed that an Islamophobic organization had been conducting workshops across Maldives island under Nasheed’s assistance.

As such, Khaleel accused Nasheed of assisting a UK-based think tank, Quilliam to conduct anti-Islam workshops in the outlying atolls, with the help from several senior ranking officials from the government.

In response, the speaker refuted the opposition member’s claims, brushing them off as an attempt to create hatred for him in the hearts of the people.

This comes at a time the opposition Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) are directing several accusations towards the incumbent administration. The workshop is to have allegedly been conducted in Hanimaadhoo island of Haa Dhaal atoll and Southernmost Addu City Hithadhoo.

A photo has since been circulating on social media where MP for Hanimaadhoo constituency, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa is seen participating in the workshops. The MP has been facing criticism from the public since.

The matter was brought to the attention of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, which has since confirmed that they are investigating the matter.
