The main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is scheduled to kick start their “Rahvehi Fathis” campaign trips during March, in which both President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Parliament Speaker, Former President Mohamed Nasheed will participate.

Speaking at a press conference at the party’s main campaign office on Monday, MDP campaign spokesperson Afshan Latheef stated that the president and speaker will be conducting door-to-door campaign activities during the trips, as part of the party’s “Rahvehi Fathis” campaign for the upcoming Local Council Elections.

Further, Solih and Nasheed will also be meeting with candidates representing the party as well as island residents throughout the campaign trips, during which MDP gatherings are also scheduled to be held.

Details of the campaign trips will be publicized in the coming days, said Afshan.

In addition, the party’s candidates and their campaign teams are to kick-start a door-to-door campaign across the entire nation on Saturday, 29 February.

As the deadline for application submissions to contest in the council elections expired last Thursday, the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) received around 3,000 applications.

982 out of the 1,912 candidates to be elected this year are contesting for the local councils and 930 for women’s development committees.

On Sunday, it was revealed that the ECM had accepted all application forms from the main ruling party, totaling 877.
